Title: Treatment of Cervical Disc Protrusions Via Instrumental Chiropractic Adjustment.
Reference: Polkinghorn BS. Treatment of Cervical Disc Protrusions Via Instrumental Chiropractic Adjustment. J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1998; 21(2):114:21
Abstract: Objective: To present a case of post-traumatic cervical syndrome involving multiple protrusions of cervical intervertebral discs, successfully treated with conservative instrumental chiropractic adjusting procedures. Discussion includes a review of the relevant literature regarding the possible advantages that instrumental adjustments may have over their manually delivered counterparts in treatment of certain atypical cases.

Clinical Features: A 42 year old woman presented for treatment of acute neck and arm pain following traumatic injury sustained in an automobile accident. Radiological examination exhibited a complete reversal of the cervical lordosis and MRI imaging of the cervical spine revealed intervertebral disc protrusions occurring at four separate levels ranging from 1 mm to 4 mm.

Intervention and Outcome: The patient was initially treated with high velocity manual manipulation of the cervical spine and reported an aggravation of her symptomatology as a result of said treatment. Thereafter, she was treated with short lever mechanical force, manually assisted, chiropractic adjusting procedures to the cervical spine, utilizing an Activator Adjusting Instrument. She tolerated the treatment very well and subsequently experienced a complete resolution of the presenting symptomatology.

Conclusion: Conservative chiropractic treatment may provide for an effective therapeutic intervention in selected cases of cervical disc herniation. Instrument delivered adjustments may provide benefit in cases where manual manipulation causes an exacerbation of the symptomatology or is contraindicated altogether. Further study in this area should be made via large scale studies organized in an academic research setting.
